ウエスタンミシガン大学名誉教授 曽我道敏博士(昭28大理物、昭和30年修物化)、2010年度日本国外務大臣褒賞授賞

sogaアメリカ ミシガン州 カラマズー市にあるウエスタン ミシガン大学 名誉教授 曽我 道敏 博士 (昭和28大理物、昭和30年修物化)は、2010年度日本国外務大臣褒賞を受けられましたので、ご連絡いたします。外務大臣褒賞授与式は、2010年8月6日 在デトロイト総領事公邸でとりおこなわれ、石河総領事より、褒賞が授与されました。

Dr. Michitoshi Soga

Dr. Soga came to the United States from Tokyo in 1961 as a researcher, after receiving a PhD in physics. In 1968 he was offered a tenure- track position on the faculty of Western Michigan University. Until his retirement in 1996 Dr. Soga worked tirelessly for the school, both in physics and in strengthening western Michigan’s affiliation with Japan.

During the early years of Dr. Soga’s teaching career study-abroad program with Japan were rare in the United States. Dr. Soga understood the importance of such programs and sought to remedy the situation. So, in addition to teaching and conducting research he took on an administrative position in the Office of International Affairs where he diligently pursued many Japanese universities, successfully securing exchange agreements with several schools , including some of Japan’s most prestigious. Exchange programs and Japanese studies flourished at Western Michigan University as a result of Dr. Soga’s dedication. He was deeply committed to the welfare of his exchange students, eventually retiring completely from teaching to work full time in international Affairs.

Dr. Soga’s remarkable contributions extended into the community, as well. While supporting the activities of the Battle Creek Japan Club, he initiated several business alliances between Japan and westrn Michigan greatly adding to the prosperity of the region. And , toi entice more Japanese companies to settle in west Michigan, he proactively supported the establishment of the Battle Creek Japanese School.

Japan-US relations have been invaluably impacted by Michitoshi Soga through his great work and efforts in western Michigan and Western Michigan University, for which this Commendation by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan is awarded.

曽我博士は、物理学の博士号を取得後、1961年に研究者としてアメリカに来られました。1968年にウエスタン ミシガン大学の教授として迎え入れられました。1996年にリタイアされるまで、曽我博士は、物理学の研究、指導みならず、西ミシガン州と日本との提携強化といったことについても、大学のために弛まぬ努力をされておられました。

曽我博士が教え始められた時代、日本で勉強するというプログラムはアメリカでは殆どありませんでした。 曽我博士は、そのようなプログラムの重要性を認識され、日米間の関係修復の道を求められました。そのお考えから、授業や研究という仕事に加えて、国際部の管理職の役割も担われました。曽我は買えは多くの日本の大学をこまめに回られて、数校と提携関係を結ばれました。その中には日本の一流大学数校も含まれております。 曽我博士のご努力により、ウエスタン ミシガン大学の交換留学制度や日本について学ぶプログラムが花を開きました。曽我博士は留学生に対する公私にわたる支援を続けられ、リタイア後はフルタイムで、国際関係事項に貢献されておられます。

曽我博士は地域社会にも貢献されておられます。バトルクリークジャパンクラブを支援する傍ら、西ミシガン州といくつかの日本企業との提携についても、指導的役割をされました。その結果、この地域の発展に寄与されております。日本の企業が西ミシガン州に根を下ろせるように、バトルクリーク日本語補習校の設立を積極的に支援されました。

曽我博士の西ミシガン州、並びにウエスタンミシガン大学での働きとご努力は、良好な日米関係に計り知れない影響を与えられました。そのお働きとご努力に対して、日本国外務大臣褒賞を差し上げるものです。
